Jairam Ramesh slams Jaishankar for slamming Siddaramaiah over Sudan tweet

 

By India Today News Desk: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh hit out at External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday, saying the Union minister gave a "most appalling response" to former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who had asked the Centre to act on reports that 31 tribals from Karnataka are stranded in Sudan.

Jairam Ramesh commented on Jaishankar's tweet slamming Siddaramaiah and said, "This level of nastiness from a man I have known so very well...who has developed new loyalties and who wants to show that in whatever he says and does."

A day earlier, Jaishankar had accused Siddaramaih of politicising the situation of Indians in violence-hit Sudan. In a sharp-tongued tweet, Jaishankar told the former Karnataka CM, "Don’t do politics" because there are lives at stake.

Siddaramaiah had asked the Centre to intervene saying 31 people from Karnataka's Hakki Pikki tribe are reportedly stranded in Sudan. He said these 31 people have been "left stranded without food since the last few days & the govt is yet to initiate action to bring them back".

He had appealed to the BJP government saying it should "immediately open diplomatic discussions & reach out to international agencies" to ensure the well-being of the tribals.

Jaishankar had replied to Siddaramaiah, saying he was "appalled" by the latter's tweet. To this, the Congress leader had retorted, "If you are busy getting appalled please point us to the person who can help us bring our people back."

Siddaramaiah said he had only appealed to Jaishankar since he was the External Affairs Minister.

According to the UN, the latest death toll in violence-hit Sudan stands at 185 with an additional 1,800 injured. One man from Kerala had succumbed to his injuries after getting hit by a stray bullet during the crossfire.

India records over 10,000 new Covid infections, pushes active cases to 63,562

India has logged 10,542 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases have increased to 63,562, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on April 19.

The death toll has increased to 5,31,190 with 38 deaths, which includes 11 reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 a.m. stated.

The Covid case tally was recorded at 4.47 crore (4,48,45,401). The daily positivity rate was recorded at 4.39% and the weekly positivity rate was pegged at 5.1%.

The active cases now comprise 0.14% of the total infections and the national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.67%, the Ministry said.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,42,50,649, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18%. According to the ministry's website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.
